The Waterford freshman took first place in the Miss Watermelon Beauty Pageant that took place Wednesday in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditiorium.
"My favorite part would be the experience of doing something I've always wanted to do," Abel said.
The event raised money for the National Food Drive for the American Red Cross. Fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha organized the event.
"We raised about $700 this year," said Rockford junior Dustin Lester, organizer and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha.
He said that it was an improvement from the $600 the group raised last year.
"It brings together Greeks and non-Greeks for a common cause," Lester said.
Judging was based on the questions provided during each round, how much money the contestant was able to raise and how many people they brought to support them.
"It was definitely a boost for my confidence," said Waterford sophomore Aleigha Phillips, second runner-up.
There were three rounds in the competition. The first was formal wear, the second was summer wear and the third was an outfit of the participants choice.
"My favorite part was getting dressed up and the chaos in the dressing room," Phillips said.
For each round, the women were asked a different question, including what they would do with $1 million, what they would change about CMU and what their idea of a dream date is.
The Miss Watermelon pageant takes place all over the United States.
This event usually consists of multiple watermelon events such as a watermelon eating contest or a watermelon toss. But those events were cut this year, Lester said.
"It didn't go well last year," he said.
