Men's basketball coach Ernie Zeigler's prized recruiting class seems to be making an impression on those within the Mid-American Conference.
The Chippewas were picked third with 131 points and garnered three first-place votes in the MAC West Division on Thursday in Cleveland by members of the MAC News Media Association. Western Michigan was picked to win the West with 173 points and 23 first-place votes, while Toledo was second with 144 points and six first-place votes.
Kent State was picked to win the MAC East with 147 points and 10 first-place votes, while defending MAC Tournament champion Miami was selected second with 146 points and nine first-place votes.
The Golden Flashes were chosen to win the MAC Tournament with seven votes, followed by WMU (6), Ohio and Miami University (5 each) and Akron (4).
Central went 13-18 overall and 7-9 in the MAC in Zeigler's first season. The 7 1/2 game improvement came off a 4-24 record, tying for the nation's 17th-best turnaround.
Zeigler and the Chippewas enter this season with the top recruiting class in the MAC, according to Clark Francis of hoopscooponline.com.
Giordan Watson also returns for his senior season at guard. Watson was a first-team All-MAC pick last season, finishing second in the conference in scoring (18.8 points per game) and sixth in assists (4.16).
Central begins its season Nov. 4 with an exhibition game against Hillsdale at Rose Arena. The regular season starts Nov. 12 against Missouri in the O'Reilly Auto Parts College Basketball Experience Classic at Columbia, Mo.
Women picked last
First-year women's basketball coach Sue Guevara's team was picked sixth in the MAC West on Thursday.
The Chippewas were 11-19 overall and 3-13 in the MAC last season under then coach Eileen Kleinfelter. CMU returns three starters, including senior Candace Wilson, who averaged 9.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
Guevara was an assistant coach at Auburn the past three seasons. Prior to that, she was the head coach at Michigan for seven seasons and is the winningest coach in U-M history.
