Laura Gaesser stood at the culmination of Wednesday's practice and addressed the soccer team about the implications of its match against Kent State.

And the senior defender and captain did so with one simple message.

"We win this game," she said. "It'll be huge for us."

The Chippewas have been stressing the importance of getting two wins this weekend against Mid-American Conference opponents. And one is a familiar foe - rival Kent State.

Central (6-7 overall, 2-4 MAC) finishes the home portion of its schedule when it hosts the Golden Flashes (6-6-1, 4-2) at 4 p.m. today, before playing Buffalo at 1 p.m. Sunday at the CMU Soccer Complex. Kent State has ousted the Chippewas from the MAC Tournament the past two seasons.

To beat Kent State this weekend, CMU has to build on the progress it made in last week's games.

"It's about managing games," said coach Tony DiTucci. "When we come out and score first and early (like last week), it helps put confidence in the team."

Central also is entering the latter part of its MAC schedule and is in position to gain games. CMU faces five teams with only nine conference wins combined to finish the season.

"We feel like we played very good teams," DiTucci said. "That was great competition and we can learn from (those games). I think we can bounce back and play better soccer down the stretch."

DiTucci said taking those early goals gives the team more energy and composure. But sophomore forward Amanda Waugh said the offense is working on an additional approach.

"We need to come out with a defensive attitude," Waugh said. "Starting from the front, we'll try to keep the ball in their half with high pressure."
