Too many students already know what they want when they come to advising appointments with Jamie Brown.

"Students make their idea of a perfect schedule, and they get really frustrated when it doesn't work out," the academic adviser said.

Registration for the spring semester opens today, making this one of the peak times for students to seek help from various academic advising sites on campus.

Michelle Howard, director of Academic Advising and Assistance, said students who are uncertain of what classes they should take should make an appointment with an adviser.

Preparation for the appointment will go a long way, she said.

"Having a sense of purpose of just what you want to do is helpful," Howard said. "But a lot of students come in empty-handed, and an adviser can work with that."

Brown said the problem most students run into is not knowing what direction they want their college careers to go in.

"Students will come in and say, 'I kind of know what I want to take,' or they're debating between two majors," she said.

Howard said advisers are able to help students decide what classes they want to pursue.

One of the first ways to get the most out of an appointment is to schedule it in advance, she said.

"The hard situations come when students have a real need to see an adviser but haven't taken the time to schedule an appointment," Howard said. "A scheduled appointment is better than a walk-in."

Howard said walk-in appointments usually are shorter because the adviser might have scheduled commitments that cut into a walk-in student's time. Students who schedule appointments do not have that problem.

Another pitfall many students run into is failing to have signed a major by the time they earn 56 credits. Students who reach junior status without a signed major are unable to register, Howard said.

Registration opens today for graduate students and students with more than 175 credits, as well as those who meet priority registration requirements in the Honors Program. Students with 134 or more credits can start registering Tuesday and open registration runs Nov. 21-25.

A full list of registration dates and times is available on the Registrar's Office Web site at registrars.cmich.edu.

John Rathje, director of application support and development at the Office of Information Technology, said he doesn't anticipate any problems with the registration system this week."We're not going to do anything special," he said.
