Mount Pleasant's first pizza shop may be open again by the start of 2008.
Pizza King owner Levi Henning said he is in the process of reopening his restaurant, which was destroyed by a fire last month.
The proposed location is on Bluegrass Road near the recently opened Coco Joe's. He said he is finishing up a deal with the Alliance Group, a company helping him secure financing and planning for the business.
"I'm looking forward to being open again and serving CMU and the Mount Pleasant community," he said.
The original Pizza King, located at 714 E. Preston St., was destroyed Sept. 16.
Henning said he would like to have the restaurant back in business by the beginning of 2008.
He also plans on extending the business's hours.
"I want to be open later on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - until 3 a.m.," Henning said. "We're going to be catering to the bar crowd."
Henning said most of the staff plans on returning to work.
Mount Pleasant sophomore Zach Fish is one of those employees.
"I can't wait to go back to work," he said. "There was never a doubt in my mind that I wouldn't go back to work."
Fish had been working at Pizza King for about five months when fire took place.
"I feel bad because Levi is such a great guy. He provides a great work environment," he said. "He doesn't deserve to be going through this."
Former employee and Mount Pleasant resident Evan Thomas Desjardins was arrested on charges of arson-real property, arson-preparation to burn property and larceny in a building. He currently is scheduled to undergo a competency and insanity evaluation, since he claims he does not recall the incident.
The fire also caused damage to The Hip-Hop Shop, 716 E. Preston St., and The Store, 710 E. Preston St.
Pizza King opened in its Preston Street location in 1963. The restaurant was owned by Bob Lovejoy until about four and a half years ago when Henning became the owner.
Henning said although the ordeal has been difficult, the situation is getting better.

This story is so sad. How could this stupid punk, Evan Thomas Desjardins, be so cruel to this town? It is truly unfortunate that the Pizza King and Hip-Hop shop, but what about The Store?
The Store is the best place to get hard to find, quality beers and wines. (Continued…)
