But the Chippewas quickly are looking ahead to Saturday's game at Kent State and the ensuing showdown with Western Michigan.
CMU (4-4 overall, 3-0 MAC) now is in sole possession of first place in the MAC West after Western lost 27-23 at home Saturday to Ball State.
"All of our goals that we set forth at the beginning of the season are still intact," said coach Butch Jones. "That's what we've got to keep our eyes on."
BSU, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan each have one divisional loss. Western and Eastern play next week in Ypsilanti, while CMU holds a tiebreaker with the Cardinals with its 58-38 win earlier in the season.
The 70-14 loss at Memorial Stadium, however, could be detrimental to Central's momentum with four MAC games remaining.
The game snapped a three-game winning streak and was CMU's worst loss since Sept. 6, 1997, when it lost 82-6 to Florida.
Senior linebacker Red Keith said all the team can do is return to the practice field this week.
"We've got to continue to improve and get back to the basics," he said. "Put this game behind us and get ready for Kent State, because they're good, too."
CMU is 2-1 following a loss this season and has beaten MAC West opponents Toledo, Ball State and Northern Illinois by a combined 66 points.
The team travels Saturday to Kent State and Nov. 6 to Western Michigan, before hosting Eastern Michigan on Nov. 16 in its final home game.
The Chippewas finish the regular season Nov. 23 at Akron.
"We have to refocus on what's at hand," said sophomore quarterback Dan LeFevour. "We've done it before earlier in the year. We have to put this one on the shelf and move on."
