Entire apartments and houses become sets for costume extravaganzas as students prepare for Halloween parties.

"I think it'd be really lame if somebody had a Halloween party and didn't put anything out," said Grand Rapids freshman Caitlin Dabrowski.

Dabrowski is helping host a party Halloween party at her Deerfield apartment.

She expects her close friends and some of their friends - a number she said was of moderate size.

Dabrowski said costumes are mandatory. If somebody arrives without a costume, she said, people in costumes began to feel somewhat foolish and the atmosphere begins to suffer.

This is her first time hosting a Halloween party.

"We thought it'd be awesome to deck out the apartment," she said.

Her Halloween décor includes blacklights and orange and purple Christmas lights, all in an effort to create a dark yet fun feel, she said.

But aside from appearances, she said her party will have the usual staples: dancing and socializing.

"It's just like a regular party, but more fun because everybody's in a costume," she said.

Gladwin sophomore Bryce Paulsen's Tallgrass apartment will be adorned with a fog machine and strobe lights this Halloween.

He expects roughly 40 people to attend.

"I think everybody should wear a costume," he said.

But the Halloween theme is not limited only to costumes and decorations. He plans to offer Jell-O shots with a festive feel - colored black or orange.

Free Jell-O shots will be offered to whoever wears a costume, he said.

As for music, Paulsen intends to add some Halloween tunes, such as the "Monster Mash," to his playlist.

Some students, however, prefer to attend a party rather than host their own.

Waterford senior Steve Dutton said he plans to visit more Halloween parties this year than in years past.

The ideal party has costumes and decorations aplenty, he said

"It should definitely have costumes," Dutton said.

For Dutton, however, Halloween festivities carry a distinct draw.

His costume, Tin Man from the "Wizard of Oz," will be fantastic, he said.

"I've got to show off my awesome costume," he said.
