As technology develops, so must teaching methodologies.
That is what Judy Brookhiser, one of two finalists for associate dean of the College of Education and Human Services, described as one crucial factor for the college.
"I'm really focused on big-picture and the future," she said.
On Tuesday, Brookhiser and Kathryn Koch, interim associate dean for the college, were named finalists for the position. Koch has held the interim position since February.
Brookhiser is an associate professor of recreation and leisure services at Murrary State University in Kentucky. She served as assistant dean and graduate coordinator for the university's College of Health Sciences and Human Services from 2000 to 2007.
She joined the university in 1990 and was the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department chair from 1992 to 2000.
Bookhiser said her professional experience, including work with enrollment and management, neatly fit the CMU job description.
"It was all the kinds of things I've been doing for some time," she said.
Koch joined CMU's faculty in 1986 and has been chair of the Human Environmental Studies department since 2003.
She said her years of experience as teacher, scholar, administrator and CMU supporter would lend themselves well to the associate dean position.
As interim associate dean, Koch said, she has learned about the college and its programs.
"I believe the reputation of CMU is built on the quality of instruction that we provide to students," she said, in an e-mail to Central Michigan Life.
The new education building is one initiative Koch hopes to help manage.
"This will be another way this college will be on the forefront of providing state of the art teaching facilities to a large number of its students, as well as new teaching resources for its faculty," she said.
Brookhiser said CMU's programs and initiatives both were attractive to her.
Diane Krider, head of search committee and associate dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, said both candidates went beyond basic job requirements.
"I think we have two very outstanding candidates," she said.
Krider said she hopes to have the position filled by next semester. Approval from both Karen Adams, dean of the College of Education and Human Services, and University President Michael Rao will be required.
Both candidates will participate in one-hour open forums. Brookhiser's will take place at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 2 in Ronan room 202, and Koch's will take place at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 in Ronan room 300.
