KENT, Ohio - An offensive explosion in the first half paced the Central Michigan football team to a 41-32 win over Kent State Saturday.
CMU's defense came up big again in the fourth quarter as KSU was unable to get any points on the board after coming within six points of the Chippewas in the third quarter.
"We came out and ran our offense," said CMU coach Butch Jones. "I thought our tempo was pretty good - the kids just made plays."
The two teams combined for 50 points and 673 total yards in the first two quarters as CMU took a 31-19 lead into the locker room.
KSU sophomore tailback Eugene Jarvis ran wild, averaging 8.2 yards per carry for 163 total yards (103 in first half) and a touchdown.
"We were just missing assignments," said senior defensive tackle Steven Friend. "Those were plays that should never happen."
KSU freshman quarterback Giorgio Morgan, who made his first career start, passed for 247 yards and three touchdowns against a CMU secondary playing without senior linebacker Red Keith for the majority of the game.
Sophomore defensive end Frank Zombo had two sacks to lead the Central defense, while sophomore cornerback Chaz West and senior linebacker Ike Brown added nine tackles each.
"I thought our D-line down the stretch played extremely well," Jones said. Down the stretch we were able to get pressure on the quarterback."
The running game was paced by a career-high 151 yards from junior tailback Justin Hoskins, who bounced back after only managing one yard on four carries at Clemson last Saturday.
Hoskins also added two touchdowns. It was his first-career 100-yard game.
"I've got to thank our linemen - I couldn't do it without them," Hoskins said.
Dan LeFevour put up big numbers against a Mid-American Conference team for the fourth game this season, going 33-for-43 with 359 yards and three touchdowns.
LeFevour also rushed for 76 yards.
CMU (5-4 overall, 4-0 MAC) scored on its first five possessions of the game and KSU (3-6, 1-4 MAC) scored on its first four.

CMU has, undoubtedly, one of the best offenses in the nations. Kudos to the offensive line. This year's line is better than last's.

In all fairness to CMU's defense, playing without Keith, Hissong, Cutts, Gordy is not an easy task. Hope the defense can get healthy soon. If so this team will be completely balanced. (Continued…)
