Spears' 'Blackout' down and dirty

Britney Spears wants you bad. Right now. She isn't even kidding.

"Blackout" is filthy, dirty pop.

Gone are the slick, over-produced ballads from her innocent years. The production is minimalist, fuzzy electro-pop, with distorted drums and buzzy synthesizers buttressing Britney's trademark vocal style.

Well, if you can call it a style, that is. Her vocals are so heavily processed that it's hard to tell if it's actually a real person singing in there.

The vocals are so pitch-perfect that it's almost impossible to imagine a real person singing them.

For all the fake, over-processed vocals, the album does have some strengths. The rough, tough production is a lot simpler than her past efforts, and it's actually quite enjoyable.

Some of you may remember a little tune by the name of "SexyBack" that featured little more than a fat drum beat and a dirty, distorted synth line. Britney's producers clearly took a cue from that song, as "Blackout" is full of similar sounds.

There are a couple detours from that sound, though.

"Heaven On Earth" is a straight-up 80's era Madonna tribute, production-wise.

The closing tune, "Why Should I Be Sad," is about as close to a ballad as Spears gets on this record, but it's still a far cry from her past hit "Lucky."

Trust me, this is a good thing.

As if you didn't already get a clue from Britney's video for "Gimme More," this is not something you want your kids listening to.

Spears uses language usually reserved for rappers, throwing in more sexual innuendoes than you can shake a stick at.

The tunes "Freakshow" and "Get Naked (I Got A Plan)" are particularly naughty. Shame shame, Britney!

But then, what else would one expect from her at this point?

Remember, she's no longer a girl, but now is a woman. A very, very depraved woman.

Four out of five stars.
