About 300 guests got ushered to the spooky spots on CMU's campus Monday and Tuesday nights.
"It's all about ghost stories," said Patrick Higgins, Richmond sophomore. "I love them, especially ones that pertain to Central."
Each 20-minute tour took students and guests to various spots around Warriner, Powers and Barnes Halls. Legends were told about horrific happenings in each of those places. A favorite was the tale of the Warriner pit.
The pit, located just outside of Warriner Hall, is one of the entrances to the underground tunnels running throughout campus.
These tunnels were once used by students when the weather was too cold - in order to get between buildings. Legend has it they were closed because of shady happenings in the pit and tunnels - including muggings, rapes and potential occult activities.
Along the tour random scares added to the chilly thrills. Chains rattled and volunteers in costumes bounded out from behind bushes while ghoulish howls rang through the night.
"I wanted to hear the spooky stories, they're fun to share with friends," said Hilary Barnard, Ludington sophomore. "The story about the piano garden was cool, but so was going down into the Warriner pit."
Another point of morbid intrigue was the Warriner seal, located directly in front of Warriner Hall. As the story would have it, two student lovers were forbidden by controlling parents from seeing one another. The lovers agreed to meet at the seal one cold winter night so they could be together. The male was late and saw his lover laying dead from the cold.
