Before video games like Guitar Hero there was the art of air guitar.

CMU students raised $627 for Partners Empowering All Kids Monday night at The Cabin, 930 W. Broomfield Road.

Okemos senior Jordan Reeser was awarded $100 for his face painted, shirtless air guitar performance of Marilyn Manson's "Tourniquet."

"The crowd was really into him (Reeser)," said Nicole Barnes, Grass Lake senior and judge of the "Play for PEAK: The Ultimate Air Guitar Competition." "He had a lot of energy and was kind of scary,"

PEAK, a partner of the United Way of Isabella County, is an after school program that keeps schools open until 6 p.m. for children grades K-6.

The competition had four individual performances and one group performance with songs like "Gimme all your lovin'" by ZZ Top and Tenacious D's "F** * Her Gently."

The performances were judged on their props/outfits, enthusiasm, stage presence and crowd participation/donations toward their favorite performance.

Matt Simcox, Breckenridge senior, said the competition was put on by a group of five RPL 430: Recreation Programming students and five volunteers for a class project.

The group also sold raffle tickets to raise money and between acts had a variety of prize packages including free bowling, massages, pedicures and T-shirts.

Wayne senior Jennifer Davidson said she got the idea for the competition from seeing it at her prior school - Northern Michigan University.

Reeser donated $50 of his winnings back to PEAK and said with the rest he was going to pay off his bar tab.

Timothy Otteman, recreation parks and leisure services and RPL 430 instructor, said almost $33,000 has been raised during the past five semesters through class projects such as this one.

"My goal is to give students practical experiences," he said. "It's much more valuable when you go out and do it."

In the past, donations have gone to organizations like Make-A-Wish, Isabella Community Soup Kitchen and the United Way, Otteman said.

The next RPL 430 group of students is hosting "Buck the Broncos Mechanical Bull Challenge" from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday at Wayside Central, 2000 S Mission St., to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
