Four area residents are looking to take a seat on the Mount Pleasant Board of Education.

The candidates for next Tuesday's election are Jeremy Brown, Donald Chiodo, Ian Gray and Jeffery Maluchnik.

Two seats are open.

Maluchnik said he has been around Mount Pleasant a long time, having attended CMU, and that experience is necessary for the seat he is vying for.

He said if elected he would work on improving several areas of weakness of the school board including school safety and financial situations.

"I don't think that we fully utilize our partners such as Central Michigan University, Mid Michigan Community College and some businesses," he said.

Tuesday's election also includes City Commission candidates and a vote on a land use issue.

The board consists of seven members, who serve a four-year term, and are elected by residents within the district. Every year one to two new members are elected on to the board, said City Clerk Robert Flynn.

Pam Dosenberry, president of the board of education, said being a board member can be a time consuming job.

"Ears and eyes need to be open 24/7," she said. "We live in a very close-knit community and I think it's important to always know what is going in every aspect so we can keep building relationships."

Members of the board required to attend monthly-televised public meetings. The board also holds a monthly "committee of the whole" meeting and a public works session where members can choose to be part of marketing, infrastructure or finance committees.

Trustee Guy Newland said the school board needs to have a strong commitment to providing the highest quality public education, since taxpayers support the school system.

There is no requirement that candidates have children or any connection to the school system to run.

But that's one of the reasons Gray, who is the wekend editor at the Midland Daily News, said he wants to get involved.
