Students looking to get into the Halloween spirit can stop by the "Haunted Yard" from 6 to 8 p.m. today at 814 N. Lansing St.
Mount Pleasant resident Cari Edgerly-Griffes said she and her daughter, Megan, have made coming to the Haunted Yard a yearly tradition.
"We look forward to it every year," Griffes said.
She said every year something at the yard scares Megan and her.
Megan Edgerly-Griffes said she was a "little creeped out" at the yard, but warmed up by the end of the night.
"I said hello to the monsters," she said.
A sign at the beginning of the Haunted Yard warns attendees not to tip off others about which characters are "real" and which are not. While the Haunted Yard has ghoulishly dressed statues, some of them could come to life when least expected.
Mount Pleasant residents Mike and Kriss Roethlisberger have transformed the area around their home every Halloween for more than 10 years.
The yard is divided into various themes including "Rat City" and "CarnEvil," filled with clowns. In another part of the Haunted Yard, guests walk through bloodstained "body bags".
The Haunted Yard strives to be a family-friendly place, offering "friendly monster time" before dark when young children can walk through the yard and greet the monsters.
"There's always a surprise," said Mount Pleasant resident Leslie Rounds.
Alexa Smith, 10, said she had fun being scared at the Haunted Yard.
"I was laughing and crying at the same time," Smith said.
Clare resident Sue Grout said she was surprised at the detail, time and effort put into the yard.
"It's incredible," she said.
Beth Townsend, 8, corrected Grout, who brought her to the yard.
"It's more than incredible," she said. "We're definitely going to do it again next year."
Farwell resident Kim Lamerand made her visit to the Haunted Yard a family affair, going with her daughter Haley, 6, and her mother, Lillian.
Mount Pleasant resident Mary Pena has been helping out at the Haunted Yard for 10 years. She said the Haunted Yard is a good place to go on a budget this Halloween.
"It's just fun because it's free," Pena said.
