The CMU Journalism Hall of Fame was established five years ago to honor alumni and friends who have made significant contributions to their professions.
Five more journalists will join that group Nov. 3 in induction ceremonies at the Bovee University Center.
John Grogan, Steve Jessmore, Lorrie Lynch and C. Marshall Matlock will be inducted as alumni. Paul Chaffee will be inducted as an honorary member.
For the first time, the Hall of Fame committee also will confer a new honor, the "Young Journalist of the Year" award. The recipient is Adam Graham, a 2000 graduate, who is the pop music critic for The Detroit News.
The ceremony also will pay tribute to the 1977-78 staff of Central Michigan Life, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary their of winning the national Pacemaker Award.
"We have an excellent field of candidates this year," said Journalism Department chair Maria Marron. "This is absolutely a great group of people who have great achievements."
They are prime examples of CMU's journalism program, Marron said.
Grogan, a 1979 graduate, is the author of the book "Marley & Me" which was published in October 2005.
Jessmore, Michigan's most award-winning photojournalist, is the photo editor of the Flint Journal. He graduated in 1981.
Lynch, a 1975 graduate, is the senior editor for USA Weekend. Matlock is a professor emeritus at Syracuse University and is the winner of the Society for Newspaper Design's Lifetime Achievement Award. He graduated from CMU is 1967.
Chaffee is the editor and publisher of The Saginaw News.
"Chaffee will receive an honorary award," said Neil Hopp, the director of student publications. "He has been a great friend of the department over the years and has helped many CMU alums."
Several members of the 1977-78 staff will be present at the banquet, including the '77 - '78 Editor in Chief Jim Reindl who works for the Associated Press.
"This is a tremendous class," said Jim Wojcik, CMU associate journalism professor and 2003 Hall of Fame inductee. "They really enhance a journalism degree from Central when looking at their contributions."
