Fraternity hazing at U-M angers Hispanic students
University of Michigan junior Ana Del Angel didn't know what to think when she saw a white male in a sombrero asking for money for Mexican children in a fake Mexican accent, according to The Michigan Daily.
Del Angel thought the man was goofing around, but when her boyfriend, Brian Garcia, asked if he knew he was being offensive, the two were shocked at his response.
The two claimed the man said he was dressed up as part of fraternity hazing.
Garcia has called for an "immediate and thorough investigation" by U-M's Interfraternity Council.
"Are these the values that the IFC stands for? Not only is an IFC organization potentially degrading their pledges, but they are also forcing them to do racist public acts," he wrote in a letter to the Michigan Daily.
Garcia and Del Angel said the man claimed he was pledging for Phi Kappa Psi.
Phi Kappa Psi President Ben Glaze denied that his fraternity was involved in the event.
MSU student reports two assaults in one night
Police at Michigan State University are investigating reports from a student who claimed she was assaulted twice between 2:55 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday in her dorm room, according to the State News.
The woman, an 18-year-old student, told police one of the assaults was by her ex-boyfriend and involved a handgun.
She said the man pointed a handgun at her head and threatened her before leaving the room. She told police she was sexually assaulted later that morning after an unknown suspect entered her dorm room and groped her.
