Trick-or-treating wasn't the only thing students did on Halloween.

About 2,000 people piled into Rose Arena at the first annual Rose Rowdie Fright Night.

Wednesday's event, aimed at increasing fan support for the upcoming men's and women's basketball seasons, included contests, free giveaways and words from the basketball coaches.

"This is your night," said Ernie Zeigler, head men's basketball coach. "We want to bring back the days when people were throwing toilet paper on the floor. This is the beginning of something special."

The idea to host the event on Halloween was Zeigler's idea. He said it should continue next year.

"We're just trying to derive excitement and really get the student body involved with the basketball season," Zeigler said.

One of the events that took place was the 3-point shooting contest, which featured the best shooters from both teams.

Senior point guard Giordan Watson squared off against junior guard Angel Chan to see who could make the most 3-point shots in one minute. Both were successful, but Chan edged out Watson as the crowd erupted.

"Girls can be better than guys," she said. "We beat them in three competitions."

The dunking contest also was a fan favorite at the event.

Sophomore guard Robbie Harman drew an applause from the crowd when he dunked. However, Chicago junior Marcus Van got the crowd excited when he leaped over a standing Harman to dunk the ball.

The new design for the Rose Rowdie T-shirts also was unveiled at the event.

Romeo freshman Luke Goldstein said the dunking contest was his favorite part of the night.

"Overall, I thought it was cool," he said. "The coaches were extremely enthusiastic."

The 2006-07 Rose Rowdie of the Year went to Gregory senior Rhet Smith.

"That kid has been here thick and thin," said Nick Williams, associate athletic director. "It's a well-deserved honor."

Williams said he hopes the event inspires the student section and will create an environment similar to that at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
