Central Michigan University students have a strong track record with many employers.

That is why Jeff Hyames, assistant director of Career Services, said job prospects are good for graduates.

"They like the Central students they hired and the interns they took on, so they come back to us," he said.

And when it comes to hiring, CMU even practices what it preaches.

"I've hired a Central student and that worked out," said Julia Sherlock, director of Career Services.

But before students get to the point where they're ready for that first job, CMU has resources to make sure they're prepared to make the leap into the real world.

That's where Career Services, located in Room 215 of the Bovee University Center, comes in.

The office provides opportunities for students to have mock interviews, assists in creating résumés and cover letters and gives students advice when selecting graduate schools.

"We help students at all levels, with any major or minor," Sherlock said.

One of the main things Career Services does is give undecided students a chance to explore options during their major and minor search.

Programs such as "What can I do with a major in…?" put on by Career Services help students make decisions about which field they wish to pursue, Sherlock said.

"We give resources on what a specific major can do for a career," Hyames said

Students looking for internships or full-time jobs have opportunities through the office as well.

"If students need advice on majors or internships, all they need to do is make an appointment to come to our offices," Hyames said.

With the help of the eRecruiting system on Career Service's Web site, careers.cmich.edu, students have an opportunity to get their résumés and names out for employers to see.

eRecruiting allows students to request on-campus interviews for internships and full-time positions, apply for positions throughout the country and upload and update customized résumés.

The process for getting into the system includes uploading a customized résumé and filling out a personal profile.

"If you don't do that, I don't know who you are and I don't know what you want -which means I can't help you," Sherlock said.

After completing the eligibility requirements in the system, students are eligible for on-campus interviewing referrals, Sherlock said.
