Stolen laptop contained student data
A laptop stolen from a Ferris State University recruiting officer contained personal information of about 18,000 current and potential students, according to WZZM 13 news.
The computer contained names, addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses for potential 2007-08 students, according to Ferris' Web site.
University officials said they're more concerned with the students receiving unsolicited e-mails than with identity theft. According to a notice on Ferris State's Web site, the information taken doesn't include drivers license numbers or banking information.
In response, Ferris State has set up a toll-free number for students who may be victims of identity theft.

SVSU to institute new smoking policy in January
As of Jan. 1, 2008, smoking will be prohibited on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University except in designated areas, according to The Valley Vanguard.
The ordinance will allow people on campus to smoke only in residential and lettered parking lots. At the same time, the rule forbidding students to smoke within 25 feet of all buildings still is in effect on campus.
"We think this will be a significant improvement," said SVSU president Eric R. Gilbertson on Wednesday.
Students had the opportunity to voice their opinions on the issue in both a face-to-face and online forum.
Gilbertson said smokers won't have to go out of their way to get their fix.
"The campus is ringed by parking lots," he said.
The policy change was announced this past Friday. There will be a referral system for reporting violations on SVSU's Web site.
