Students unable to attend this year's rivalry clash between Central and Western don't have to feel left out.
Between classes and other campus activities, the choice to put the annual grudge match on a Tuesday may be frustrating to some - but alternatives are available for students staying in Mount Pleasant.
A Chippewa Football Pep Rally will take place at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of the Bovee University Center to cheer on the team before they leave for Kalamazoo.
Office of Student Life and the Student Government Association's Traditions and Spirit Committee are hosting the event.
"People can come and support the team and still make it to class on time," said Elizabeth Pilling, Office of Student Life intern.
The Mount Pleasant senior said the team will arrive in front of the UC and coach Butch Jones will give a short pep talk to ralliers. At 2:30 p.m., the team will get back on the bus and head to Kalamazoo, she said.
Samantha Wunderlich, Pleasant Ridge sophomore and Traditions and Spirit Committee co-chair, said there will be a "Beat Western" piñata that participants can take a whack at.
Wunderlich said members from the marching band will be there to play the fight song. There also will be free hot dogs and punch, she said.
Game Day
On The Fly Productions is hosting "Big Game on the Big Screen," a live viewing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Finch Fieldhouse. Kickoff for the game is at 7:30 p.m.
Free food is being offered by local businesses.
Houghton Lake sophomore Doug Pryor said he plans to go to the viewing at Finch Fieldhouse.
"I'm going to Finch because of the big screen," he said. "I'm staying here because I have an early class and can't afford to lose sleep for it."
Laingsburg freshman Michael DeZess has different plans.
Some local sport bars are having specials for the game. Buffalo Wild Wings, 1904 S. Mission St., is having its typical wings special as well as pints of beer for $1.25 from 7:30 p.m. to close.
O'Kelly's Sports Bar and Grill, 2000 S. Mission St., is selling $1 pints Tuesday.
Students planning to stay home are finding other options to enjoy the game.
"I thought of going to the Fieldhouse, but I'm probably just going to chill with some friends back at my dorm," DeZess said. "I don't feel the need to drive (to Western) for one game and drive back. Especially when you have class the next day."
