Friendship took Paula Erskin to the Deerfield Nature Park for the 33rd Annual Turkey Trot 6K Trail Run.
The run, which took place Sunday, brought a crowd of 68 runners to the course.
"I personally love the friends I have made from running," said Erskin, Strider CMU Representative and executive secretary for the CMU Athletics Department. cq
The Striders is a Mount Pleasant-based organization of runners that hosts about 15 events throughout the year, including the CMU Homecoming Road Race 5K cq each fall.
Age and experience varied at Sunday's race. The park featured some high-schoolers all the way to runners well into their 60s.
"I like that it's local and it's for a local organization and it's fun, I always like these races," said Meghan Fox, Weidman senior and first time trot runner. cq
The money from the event went to fund more runs in the future.
Medals were handed out to the top person in each category. The Men's Champion was Blanchard resident Rick Cahoon, 30, and the Women's Champion was Alma resident Sharon Becker, 36.
The event changed locations since it's inception 33 years ago, said Dave Alsager, race director for the Striders. cq The run used to take place at Riverwood Golf Course, 1313 E. Broomfield Road, before moving to Holiday Greens Golf Course, 5665 E. Pickard Road, and finally Deerfield Nature Park, 2425 W. Remus Road, Alsager said.
The race was initially run by the CMU intramural department before the Striders took it over, Alsager said.
Noel Gingerich, a first time runner, said he enjoyed the trails. cq
"It's all on trails, I did cross country and track so I really really love the trails," the Tawas City freshman said.
The Striders next event is the Dickens of a Run 5K, taking place Dec. 1 at Max and Emily's, 125 E. Broadway St. The 5K race costs $8 for early registration and $10 for the day of the race.
