The club hockey team earned a 5-3 win Saturday night against No. 2 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor.
CMU, ranked sixth in the latest Central Region rankings, was able to erase a two-goal deficit and capture its biggest win of the season. The team lost a close game Friday night to Division 1 Oakland University, 5-4.
"Our weekend was a big weekend," said coach Chris LaPan. "Losing 5-4 to a D1 team and beating the second-ranked (D2) team, hopefully it sends some messages out there."
The first period of the Michigan game was physical and fast-paced, but neither team scored.
"When we play the teams that are ranked in the top three or four, you know it's going to be a lot more physical and a faster game just because the skill level and talent's higher," said captain Craig Lipar.
CMU struck first in the second period when sophomore Jordan Jakubik scored on a shorthanded goal 1 minute, 15 seconds into the period. Michigan then scored three unanswered goals, putting CMU in a two-goal hole.
Sophomore Greg Martin got Central within one goal just 43 seconds after Michigan's third goal. Martin took a pass and skated along the side boards before cutting in toward the net, making the goaltender open up his five-hole before sliding the puck in the goal.
At the start of the third, Jakubik tied up the game after stealing the puck from a U-M defender at U-M's blueline and skating in on a breakaway. Jakubik faked to the blocker side and scored over the goalie's glove.
"It was real important (to get the goal), we wanted to jump on them early in the third," Jakubik said.
With less than 10 minutes to play in the third period, sophomore Mike Lesnau beat a U-M defender to the puck in the corner, worked his way to the front and crashed the net for a goal, giving Central the lead for good.
"That was huge. We weren't really getting a lot of traffic on the net the whole game," Lipar said. "We were getting very minimal shots compared to what we have been. That's what it was going to take is just hard work and going to the net."
Jakubik added an insurance goal with 3:24 remaining.
Central (7-3 overall) faces Ferris State at 9 p.m. Friday at the Isabella County Events Arena.
