Cold, frosty drinks are a summer memory.
When autumn's chill becomes a factor in food and drink selections, student's seasonal needs can be found inside one of Mount Pleasant's coffee houses.
Big Apple Bagels, 2024 S. Mission St., offers a specialty coffee every month. This month, it's a pumpkin pie spice coffee.
For students who prefer their drinks decaffeinated, Kaya Coffee & Tea Company, 1029 S. University St., offers "the caramel apple."
Kristen Cowling, barista and Metamora junior, said the drink, made with apple cider, cinnamon, caramel and praline flavor, tastes just like the treat after which it is named.
"It's delicious," she said.
The drink will be available at Kaya until cider is no longer sold in stores. The drink continues to be popular each year and is often requested even after it is no longer featured on the menu, Cowling said.
The Caramel Apple currently is the drink of the moment at Kaya, which means customers receive a 25 cent discount if they order it.
By offering the Caramel Apple, Cowling believes he is setting the mood for fall.
"We try to keep things festive," she said.
Even if they may not be advertised, many fall-themed drinks remain available year-round at some local establishments.
This month, Java City will begin to focus its specialty drinks on the coming months, but the Great Pumpkin Latte and spiced cider will be available upon request.
The University Cup, 1027 S. Franklin St., features three specialty drinks: the nutty caramel apple latte, a pumpkin pie white mocha and hot apple cider.
Whitehall junior Megan Erickson, a barista at the University Cup, said the drinks are especially popular since they are featured on the drinks board.
The cider and the pumpkin pie white mocha usually are the most popular among patrons. Though, Erickson said she and other baristas often recommend a pumpkin pie chai tea latte.
"It will blow you away," Erickson said.
The drink tastes just like the pie, she said.
