Finch Fieldhouse was home to cheers and jeers during the rivalry game between Central and Western.

About 400 students gathered on Tuesday night to watch "The Big Game on the Big Screen," hosted by On The Fly Productions.

"This is the closest thing to being there at Western," said Andrea Frear, Fenton senior. "It's definitely better than going to someone's house."

The game was shown on a huge inflatable screen. Bleachers were set up around the screen to simulate a game-like atmosphere.

The annual rivalry struggle was host to controversy this year because the game was scheduled on a Tuesday. Many students stayed at CMU to watch the game and its coverage on ESPN2.

"It's a long drive," Frear said. "I had class until 6 p.m., I had an early class in the morning. I just figured I didn't need to be there."

A variety of local businesses took care of free snacks for students.

Domino's, 706 S. Mission St., Buffalo Wild Wings, 1904 S. Mission St. and Papa Johns, 1504 S. Mission St., all provided eats for hungry fans. Free gifts were given during halftime.

Sterling Heights senior and OTF public relations chair Cristina D'Aristotile helped to organize the event.

"Last year we held a similar event with the University of Michigan game," she said. "We saw that the WMU game was away, so we thought it would be a good idea to do it for that."

D'Aristotile said the event was meant to replicate a game day atmosphere. She said she was surprised at the turnout for the event.

"It's even more successful than we thought it would be," she said. "We actually ran out of food and had to order more pizza. I'm so happy that so many people came."

Freeland junior John Stephen said he thought the event would be a new experience.

"I thought it'd be neat to see on the big screen," he said. "I don't usually go to these types of things."

Stephen said he didn't go to WMU to watch the game because of the distance and temperature.

"This is just more convenient," he said.

Kristen Janer said she stayed at CMU because of the weather.

"It was cold," the Bay City freshman said. "Besides, what could be better than spending time with fans and free food?"
