Work on the new Education Building is on budget and on schedule.

Construction will continue throughout the winter, said Steve Lawrence, vice president of Facilities Management.

Winter construction is a common practice in Michigan, and necessary if the building is to be completed by its February 2009 deadline, Lawrence said.

"The intent is to work throughout the winter, employing various temporary enclosures as necessary to permit temporary heating and protection from the weather, to permit acceptable construction practices," Lawrence said.

He said work is progressing on basement and first-floor level projects, including utility hookups and masonry work in the building's basement and fabrication of steel floor panels for the first floor. Structural steel beams also are being erected, which provide the building's framework.

The Board of Trustees could decide whether to move forward with renovations to Rose Arena during their Dec. 6 meeting.

Lawrence said planning proposals for the project have been completed.

"The next step is up to the university trustees. The conceptual design was reviewed with the Facilities Subcommittee," Lawrence said, in an e-mail to Central Michigan Life. "It's up to that committee to move the issue to the full Board of Trustees for consideration."

The Rose Events Center, as it would be known if the renovations are approved, would include several major changes to the current facility, Lawrence said.

The entrance would be updated so it would be clearly visible, the sound system would be improved, more seating and a new concession stand would be added as would a practice gymnasium, he said.

"The conceptual plan includes … the ability to retract the floor seats to create two cross courts for summer camp use," Lawrence said.

Steve Smith, director of media relations, said he heard the trustees talking about bringing up the Rose issue for their December meeting.

"It was my understanding that that was going to go forward in December," Smith said. "It's not on the agenda right now - it's something the facilities subcommittee would have to bring forward."
