An ordinary classroom will become a coffeehouse tonight, playing host to musical artists Chinua Hawk and Chris Cauley.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for Program Board's free "Urban Coffeehouse" concert in Pierce 128. The show is pegged to start at 8 p.m.

It will feature Hawk and Cauley, who are performing exclusively on college campuses as part of their "Brother from Another Mother" tour. Hawk plays Christian music while Cauley plays an acoustic style.

"This is an opportunity for people to get a taste of a diverse type of music that they normally don't get to hear," said Haley Rank, Program Board concert chair.

Tonight's performance will be Hawk and Cauley's second time at CMU; last year they performed at Program Board's annual charity auction.

Both artists hail from Atlanta and have done concerts at other area colleges, performing at both Western Michigan University and Ferris State University in September.

"It'd be fun to go with a group of friends. It would be a good social event," said Cadillac freshman Matt Lipinski.

Coffee, hot chocolate and snacks will be given out, keeping with the theme of a coffeehouse.

This is the second concert in the series. The first, featuring singer/songwriter Jason Reeves, in Moore Hall's Townsend Kiva, attracted about 150 people.

Unlike the T-Pain concert in Rose Arena, coffeehouse concerts are designed to be a different atmosphere, putting the audience closer to the act.

"You feel like you're part of the show and not just watching it," said Rank, a Marysville senior.

As with the Reeves show, organizers said they expect students to enjoy Hawk and Cauley.

"Students should support the shows and we appreciate any feedback they give us," said Christa Smalligan, Program Board's comedy chair.

Some students have noticed the Facebook ads and posters for the show.

"It sounds like it would be a good way to have fun on a Friday night," said Nicole Wachner, Pinckney freshman.

Program Board already is planning several concerts and programs for next semester, including a larger concert for Sibs Weekend and several additional coffeehouse shows.
