On a cold night at the Rubber Bowl, Akron's offense heated up.
The Zips accumulated 419 yards of total offense Wednesday as they held off a late Bobcats surge to beat Ohio at Akron, Ohio, 48-37.
"I'm happy for the kids because a lot of people thought we didn't have anything to play for," Akron coach J.D. Brookhart told the Akron Beacon. "But our kids are about the right thing and they showed that."
"Today was not different than a lot of other games. We converted and didn't make the momentum-swinging mistakes."
Ohio started the scoring off with a 34-yard field goal from Michael Braunstein, but the Zips responded on the ensuing kickoff with a 95-yard touchdown return from running back Bryan Williams.
Alex Allen led the Bobcats with with 96 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Chris Jacquemain threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
Running back Kalvin McRae had 109 yards on 21 carries and a 54-yard touchdown for the Bobcats. Ohio quarterback Brad Bower completed 17-of-37 passes for 239 yards.
