Women's basketball coach Sue Guevara said the team's first regular season game is just the first mile in a 31-mile marathon.
Central faces Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. today at Rose Arena for the opening game of a new season with a new coach. But Guevara is not looking ahead on the schedule, but rather looking at each game one at a time.
However, that doesn't mean she doesn't have specific expectations.
"I want to see some improvement in our defense and rebounding," Guevara said. "We're in a new defensive system and we're still evolving."
Guevara said the team was exposed during its two exhibition games, allowing 83 and 71 points. The Chippewas also regressed in offensive rebounding, going from 26 to 17 from the first game to the second.
Better shot selection in the second game led to fewer offensive rebounds and more shots made. Central has a goal of coming out strong in its first game at home.
"We want to come out aggressive and run the floor," said freshman guard Camille Ramsey. "Get quick shots and quick points."
For other players, Friday is the first test for the team to play a regular season game under a new coach.
One of those players is sophomore forward Britni Houghton, who led the Chippewas in scoring through the exhibition season. Another is senior forward Dana Westover, who will fill the vacant post position created by Ann Skufca's graduation.
"We have to believe in the offense and defense," Westover said. "There's a purpose behind coach's philosophy - she knows what she's doing."
Guevara said she will start freshman guard Shonda Long after seeing a lot of promise in the first-year player.
"Shonda understands the game," Guevara said. "She has a very nice future ahead."
Long started the last exhibition game, playing 23 minutes and scoring 11 points.
Forward Sherryia Armstrong is another freshman looking to contribute. Armstrong, who is working to establish herself in the post, had 10 rebounds during the two exhibition games.
"Everybody has a role," Guevara said. "And all will contribute in different ways."
