The club hockey team continued its momentum Friday with an 8-5 win against Ferris State at the Isabella County Events Arena.

The team (8-3 overall) won its second consecutive game and has won five of its last six. For the first time this year the team got out to a first-period lead.

"We were in the locker before the game and we said we got to go out there and we got to play the first period like we play the second and third," said junior Andrew Anson.

The team went into the locker room up 3-1 and continued to play well in the second, going up 6-2. In the third, however, Central gave up three goals.

"The third period we kind of sat back," said captain Craig Lipar. "We kind of knew we were going to win the game and just got kind of lazy which isn't good, but I don't think that's going to be a habit we get into."

In addition to starting fast, the team also finally got production from its power play unit.

"Our power play tonight was really coming around," Anson said. "We got a new power play, it's working extremely well. We're getting a lot of shots, a lot more action around the front of the net."

Leading the team offensively was sophomores Jordan Jakubik, Greg Martin and Mike Lesnau. Jakubik had two goals and two assists, Martin had two goals and Lesnau had a hat trick. Juniors Tim Marttila and Marty Lipar each had a goal.

Like many of the games that CMU has played, the game ended up being somewhat physical. Sophomore Joseph VanderMarliene and freshman Ashton Munoz were involved in fights, but will not be suspended for any of the games next weekend.

Even with the fights, Lipar said the team stayed together and stayed out of the penalty box much better than Ferris did.

"We pretty much held our composure besides those two fights," said the Mount Pleasant senior.

The team has an important stretch next weekend. CMU plays Robert Morris College on Friday and Saturday before a crucial game Sunday against No. 3-ranked Davenport.
