The women's basketball team won its first regular season game in coach Sue Guevara's debut.
But it almost didn't happen that way.
The Chippewas overcame Illinois-Chicago's late comeback attempt to secure a 76-71 win at Rose Arena.
"How about that one?" Guevara said. "It was a game of runs (transitions). I thought our players did a great job of maintaining composure during the runs."
Britni Houghton helped stage the rally as she scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the final eight minutes. The sophomore forward helped keep CMU in the game as the lead changed sides 11 times in the last eight minutes.
Houghton said it had much to do with finishing plays.
"Drawing contact and going to the line," Houghton said. "As a team, we had a hard time finishing, but we just had to do it. We were all working as a team. (We) plan to keep it like that."
CMU struggled near the end of the first half as it watched a 10-point lead almost disappear.
Junior guard Latisha Luckett's 3-pointer with 1:49 remaining gave CMU a 29-27 lead at half.
CMU dominated early in the second half on offense as it increased a two-point lead to 13. But that's when UIC started its comeback.
Jessica Miller hit at 3-pointer to spark a 10-0 run for the Flames.
"In transition, we started to get tired," Guevara said. "(We only made) one pass. They'd get the rebound and go down to the other end. We needed to make extra passes, make the defense shift and that's how we get our rest."
Guevara reinserted Houghton at the 8:30 mark and CMU's offense again started to prosper. Houghton scored four points in her first minute back to put CMU up by one point.
UIC took a four-point lead after it hit consecutive 3-pointers and a free throw.
CMU answered with Luckett's jumper and junior guard Angel Chan's free throw. Freshman guard Shonda Long made a lay up and Houghton added another basket to give CMU a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
