Greeks interested in signing up for a leadership class now are out of luck.
A new class that will be offered next semester LDR 200G: Intro to Leadership is at full capacity.
The class is designed for Greeks only, and can be used to fulfill requirements for a leadership minor.
"I was pretty nervous about whether it would be popular," said Daniel Gaken, coordinator of Student Leadership Development. "But the course is full. Actually, there is a wait list."
The class will teach the same materials as traditional leadership classes.
The only difference will be the way that Greeks use the material to better their fraternities and sororities.
"It gives us a way to make materials more relevant to students to increase learning," Gaken said.
Gaken said the class will continue to be offered in future semesters because it has gained so much interest.
Scott Konkol said he was introduced to the idea of the class when he attended a Greek conference. Another school provided the class and talked about how beneficial it had been to the Greeks and the campus as a whole, he said.
"It's going to be a leadership development class that will teach students to work together as a community," the Saginaw junior said. "It will build a stronger organization."
Lake Isabella senior Craig Torgerson already is enrolled for the course. He said he's excited to enhance his knowledge of leadership and increase the Greek's sense of community when it comes to events and planning.
"This will be a new opportunity," he said. "Greek is almost a lifestyle, a lifelong commitment. This will give us a good way to relate to each other."
Torgerson said he hopes the class will change the chain of same-sex competition that goes on between fraternities and sororities.
Torgerson said the non-Greek community may see the class as favoring the Greek community, but he hopes students will understand. He said that he hopes this will encourage others to go Greek.
Gaken, who will teach the class, is a fraternity alumnus. Increased learning is important, he said, and the class will help Greeks understand leadership in a way that accommodates Greek life.
