The Central Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross plans to teach a course that could help save someone's life someday.

A class on compression-only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, commonly known as CPR, will emphasize new techniques.

"Instead of using the traditional mouth to mouth resuscitation, to prevent diseases from being spread, it could be safer and cleaner to do compression's to the heart to prevent someone from dying," said Marty Malcolm, Health Sciences instructor.

Studies show that when a person is having a heart attack it is better to use compression-only CPR to revive them, Malcolm said.

Although the prices and time for the courses have not been set yet, the American Red Cross wants to hear from those interested, said Marie Fussman, health and safety coordinator for the Red Cross.

Those interested in the CPR course can visit the chapter's Web site at centralmichigan.redcross.org or call 773-3615.

"This course will offer not only the teaching of compression-only CPR, but also how to notice a cardiac arrest, strokes, allergic reactions and other forms of sudden illnesses that people may need assistance with," Fussman said.

Dowagiac junior Keera Morton said she would prefer the compression-only method in some cases.

"I was taught to use mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in extreme cases," she said. "But I think if it came down to it and I did not know the person I had to give CPR to, I would use compression-only CPR just to prevent myself from possibly getting any viruses,"

Students going into Human Services should learn the compression-only CPR and regular mouth-to-mouth CPR, Malcolm said.

Compression-only CPR is so new in the health professions that it is almost necessary for up-and-coming professionals, he said.

Students should learn compression-only CPR because they never know when they will come upon a situation where they will need to use it, Mortin said.
