True or False - there are 132 stitches on an official major league baseball?

This was just one of the questions asked during the quiz show fundraiser "Are You Smarter than a Professor" Monday night at The Cabin, 930 W. Broomfield Road.

More than 60 students showed up to test their wits against four CMU professors and administrators.

"The questions were really difficult," said Tracy Olrich, associate professor of physical education and sport. "I think I got more wrong than right."

The show consisted of eight categories: Academics, sports, technology, current events, animals, geography, pop culture and miscellaneous. The students were allowed to cheat in three ways: Peek, copy or save.

"If students want to 'peek' they are able to ask the professor or an audience member," said Erin Mateyak, Shelby Township junior and event organizer. "If they choose to copy, they copy the professor's answer and they must take that answer. If they get the answer wrong they can choose to 'save,' meaning if the professor gets the right answer, they save the student."

The other faculty members were John Meixner, associate professor of philosophy and religion, Marcie Otteman, associate director for transfer admissions and operations and Saginaw graduate assistant Peter Knutson.

Students were chosen at random by raffle. They then picked the professors they wanted to go up against first. The professors rotated every two questions.

Once a student got a wrong answer, they were eliminated.

Students who got five or more answers correct received better prizes than those who didn't. The prizes ranged from beer posters to Detroit Red Wing tickets.

The event was a project in RPL 430: Recreational Programming, an event planning class.

One of the groups designed this game that donated all of its proceeds to the Mary McGuire Elementary School, 4883 E. Crosslanes Road.

"We were collecting 'Box Tops' for the school since they were the only school registered in the Mount Pleasant area," Mateyak said. "This game show was our other idea to contribute even more."

Local businesses and professors donated the prizes.

The students within the group all had little roles during the show.

"I liked the announcer the best," said Aaron Rambow, Saginaw sophomore. "He was witty and smart, and kept me interested."

The crowd cheered as the students answered difficult questions correctly.

"It was really challenging," Olrich said. "But it was all in good fun and for a great cause."

And the answer is false; there are 108 stitches on an MLB baseball.
