Starting next year, the sixth and seventh floors of Troutman Hall will be set aside for a specific group of students - the ones who are members of a fraternity or sorority.

During the 2008-09 school year, the two floors will be reserved for members of the Greek community, said Bill O'Dell, Troutman Hall residence hall director.

"If you have a floor and it's full of Greeks, you have something in common. But also you come from different groups," O'Dell said. "You can see how much you have in common opposed to how different you are."

O'Dell, an Alpha Chi Rho adviser, said the idea is to reach out and educate new Greek students on how to organize, plan and follow through with events and programs in a smart and effective way.

Greek-affiliated students will be required to enroll in LDR 200G: Intro to Leadership, which focuses on Greek community leadership and attend weekly leadership meetings.

"I really hope to accomplish a greater sense of unity, a stronger knowledge of risk management and hopefully that results in the growth of our Greek system," O'Dell said.

O'Dell said Bowling Green State and Northern Arizona universities have set aside entire residential halls for Greeks and have been successful. He said he has been in touch with both schools while trying to establish similar programs at CMU.

Assistant Director of Residence Life Cal Seelye said sophomores are the primary target, but doesn't think anyone will be turned away from living on the floors because of class standing. Together the two floors have a maximum capacity of 48 students, he said.

Livonia senior Shawn Wrathell said living side-by-side will benefit the Greek students. Students will be able to take what they learn to their chapters, he said.

Wrathell, an Alpha Chi Rho member, said at least one member of his fraternity plans to live on one of the floors next year.

"This is something that should go on forever," he said.

O'Dell said he has heard students interested, but didn't have an estimate for totals.

Interested students can contact O'Dell at 774-3731 or at odell1we@cmich.edu.

This is truly a wonderful idea! Creating exclusive floors for Fraternity/Sorority members is a great way to keep the Greeks isolated and away from everyone else. (Continued…)

Hey! Segregation! Neat!

That's sarcasm for anyone who hasn't noticed. Could we please stop catering to these organized cliques already?
