"It's our first road game," said junior Angel Chan. "Temple is a really good team … we just played below our level."
Chan led all scorers with a career-high 17 points while shooting 5-of-11 from the field and 3-of-7 from 3-point range. Chan's jump shot with 10 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the first half helped CMU (1-1 overall) pull within five of the Owls (1-0).
That's when the Owls began to heat up. Temple outscored CMU 18-5 in the final 10 minutes of the half to take a 38-20 lead.
The Owls kept their momentum going in the second half behind Comfort's team-high 16 points. Ashley Morris added 15 points and freshman Lindsey Kimmel scored 12 of her 14 points from behind the 3-point line.
Comfort's 6-foot, 2-inch frame was difficult to handle all night, said coach Sue Guevara.
"Lady Comfort makes you real uncomfortable," Guevara said. "We doubled her, we tripled her … she's just a horse."
CMU freshman Shonda Long had 10 points and four rebounds in the game. The Owls held CMU's leading scorer, Britni Houghton, to just two free-throw makes in the game.
The Chippewas will prepare this week for their upcoming home game at 2 p.m. Saturday against Guevara's former assistant at Michigan, Angela Jackson, who coaches at Chicago State (1-1).
The Chippewas, off a plane flight from Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon, won't rest for long.
"I think the key this week will be energy," Chan said. "I think that we're going to need a lot of energy this week for Saturday's game."
