Audience members laughed Thursday afternoon after one student confused the Statue of Liberty with the White House.

Six international students were tested on their cultural knowledge during International Education Week's Quiz Show in the Bovee University Center Terrace Rooms A and B. About 20 students and faculty attended the event.

When asked of the name of the statue in New York City, the student replied "the White House."

English Language Institute Instructor Mimi Doyle said the event went well.

"I'm glad we had a good turnout," Doyle said. "They seemed to have fun and most of all my students had fun."

The ELI hosted the event and Doyle's students helped set up the show.

The contestants included students from China, Korea and Saudi Arabia.

A total of 16 questions were asked in two rounds in the competition.

Some of the questions that were asked included what an appropriate American dinner party gift is, which drew the response of "a Rolex watch," and what is the correct thing to say when someone sneezes, which drew the response of "God forgive you." Another question asked the meaning of a hangover.

Saudi Arabian freshman Saleh Alanazi won the competition by answering the final question correctly.

"I am so happy, I would like to thank the International Office and everyone who showed up," he said.

Ten points were awarded for each correct answer.

The questions also focused on other cultures, including the national symbol of China, color of luck and most popular Korean side dish.

This was the first year the quiz show took place.

"I think it went well. It was a great experience for them to speak English in front of an audience," said Tracy Nakajima, coordinator of international students.

Prior to the event, contestants and guests were given a soup lunch.

A banquet featuring Mohib Israr, Rotary Scholar speaker and Afghanistan graduate student, will take place at 6:30 p.m. today at the Comfort Inn, 2424 S. Mission St. It is $25 for the general public and $10 for students.
