Brown said her friends generally had one of two reactions to her Peace Corps enlistment.

"Either 'that's really cool' or 'why would you do that?'" she said.

Still, Brown said her closest friends were supportive, including her roommate Brittaney Fritz.

"Every time she'd get off the phone with a new piece of information about the Peace Corps, she'd run into our living room and tell me all about it," the Cedar Springs senior said. "When it became official, we were both ecstatic."

Keeping in touch with her friends back home could be a challenge for Brown.

"I've already kind of got my network of letter writers because I don't know if I'm going to have Internet or anything," she said.

Bellaire sophomore Jenna Minish, Brown's former roommate, plans to stay in touch with her friend.

"I can't wait to hear all about her trip," Minish said.

Despite separation from her friends and loved ones, Brown is excited.

"I just kind of look at it as an adventure," Brown said, "I get to live in a completely different society, speak a completely different language for two years and the government is paying for it. I just think that's really cool."
