Frustration at Kelly/Shorts

Last-minute penalty, missed field goal doom Central in 48-45 loss to EMU

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jeff Maddux ripped the helmet off an Eastern Michigan defender grabbing his leg on a busted play and threw it towards mid-field.

Unfortunately for CMU, the ball moved back as well and so did CMU's hopes of winning. EMU pulled out a 48-45 win Friday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium to win the Michigan MAC Trophy.

Sophomore quarterback Dan LeFevour tried a screen pass to his left on a second-down-and-10 from the EMU 14-yard line. But there were no receivers available and it hit Maddux, which constituted an illegal touching penalty for five yards and loss of down.

Maddux was also penalized 15 yards for throwing the helmet, moving CMU back from the EMU 14-yard line to the 34.

"Football's a game played by human beings," said CMU coach Butch Jones. "Individuals make mistakes, and it just happened, and when Dan let go of the ball it just hit a lineman."

After an incomplete pass by LeFevour on third-down-and-30, sophomore kicker Andrew Aguila missed a 52-yard field goal wide-right that would have sent the game into overtime for the fourth consecutive year.

Instead, CMU was left looking for answers, yet still looking ahead.

"You've got to look at the big picture," said sophomore quarterback Dan LeFevour. "The same thing happened last year except it was a lot worse. There's still plenty ahead for us."

The game-winning drive was capped off by EMU senior running back Pierre Walker's 1-yard run - his third touchdown of the game.

The extra point was no good after EMU was called for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty enforced on the try, putting the Chippewas down only three with 3:08 remaining.

Walker had 31 carries for 149 yards and three touchdowns. It was his fourth consecutive game rushing for over 100 yards.

EMU dominated time of possession, possessing the ball for 38:30 compared to CMU's 21:30.

"It was a hard-fought game," said Jones. "Hats off to Eastern Michigan - we made too many mistakes to win the football game."

And how we've shown with such class how we play football at CMU. Mr. Maddux do you have any idea how you have set CMU football and the University as a whole back because of your jackass and classless move. (Continued…)

It's too late in the season for a coach's quotes to be "hats off to the opponent" and "we made too many mistakes to win the game" against a 3-8 squad. (Continued…)

The defense was unacceptable. SIX FOR SIX ON FOURTH DOWN! You people get paid to put a good defense on the field, and you let us down coaches. Lets whip this team into shape and get a win at akron and back on track. (Continued…)
