The wrestling team has eight returning national qualifiers.

But several starting positions still are up for grabs. Coach Tom Borrelli will be watching closely at the CMU's annual intrasquad meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rose Arena.

"No matter your rank or who you are, we're starting all over again," Borrelli said.

Veteran leadership is abundant for Central and several spots, especially the upper weights, likely are filled.

Seniors Bubba Gritter, Brandon and Christian Sinnott, Luke Smith and Wynn Michalak all are nationally ranked in their respective weight classes and likely will take their places in the starting lineup when the season begins.

"We have a lot of senior leadership this year," Michalak said. "Coach is leaving it up to us to be in shape and ready to go when the time comes."

One match to watch is at 157 pounds, where sophomores Steve Brown and Tyler Grayson will have a wrestle-off for the starting nod in the first meet. With Andy Keller graduated, both Grayson and Brown will have plenty of opportunities to wrestle in the 157 spot this season.

The 141-pound and 149-pound weight classes also are tight competitions, but wrestle-offs may have to wait for another day because of injuries.

Sophomore Tony D'Alie (141) and redshirt freshman Nathaniel Holt (149) are recovering from injuries and are expected to challenge for a starting role when they return.

Until then, the 141-pound weight class likely will belong to returning Mid-American Conference champion Eric Kruger. Senior Brandon Carter will be at 149 pounds.

CMU is expecting another successful campaign and hopes to earn its 10th consecutive MAC title. The Chippewas are a team with higher aspirations than just winning the MAC, however.

"The guys in this room think we can compete for a national title," Smith said. "I think I'm wrestling the best I ever have and expect to be a national champion."
