On Friday, a banquet recognized those places while marking the close of International Education Week.
Many students who attended the banquet, at the Comfort Inn Conference Center, 2424 S. Mission St., were either international students or students who had participated in an International Education program.
"We've accomplished a lot, but have a long way to go," said Guilan Wang, director of International Education.
The banquet celebrated all the events that happened during International Education week.
Indian graduate assistant Glory George was looking forward to meeting new people and seeing old friends.
"It's a place where international students and the community come together. It shows support for students." George said.
French, Italian, Creole and American cuisine was featured at the dinner.
Mohib Israr was the night's keynote speaker. The Afghani graduate student and Rotary Scholar talked about his home country and the education system there.
Israr said he wanted everyone to take two things from the speech.
"(I want them to) know that positive things are going on in Afghanistan and I want to build a better relationship between the U.S. and Afghanistan," he said.
Israr is helping to make education more readily available by collecting books for Afghanistan's schools.
Amsterdam freshman Omri De Boers said Israr's experience was important to share.
"It was a great speech, it showed a lot of the circumstances of places in the word that you don't hear about," he said.
Many people at the banquet had similar reactions to Israr's speech.
"It was awesome, I've seen things in the news, but hearing it firsthand from someone who has experienced it, is amazing," George said.
