On the eve of the latest rankings release, the club hockey team dropped a crucial game.
No. 6 Central lost Sunday to No. 3 Davenport 7-3 in a Central Region matchup.
"The difference in the game was they capitalized on their chances and we didn't," said junior Andrew Anson.
The team also faced Robert Morris twice this weekend, winning 7-3 Friday and 3-1 Saturday.
The first period against Davenport was a back-and-forth affair. Davenport scored in the first minute, but sophomore Greg Martin tied the game two minutes later.
Davenport then took the lead again, but CMU answered when sophomore Ian Carlson scored. DU took a 3-2 lead going into the intermission after scoring with about eight minutes remaining.
"We had a rough time picking up people in our defensive zone," said coach Chris LaPan.
Sophomore Jordan Jakubik scored off a pass from sophomore Mike Lesnau with 2:50 into the third to tie the game at three. With 3:45 left, Davenport scored to take the lead and scored against later on a breakaway after a CMU defender got caught pinching.
"It really took our momentum away," Anson said.
In the third, Davenport scored a crucial goal to go up 6-3 just 1:45 in.
"The biggest one that hurt was the very first one in the third period," LaPan said.
With the game virtually out of hand, Central played flat in the third, allowing Davenport to add one more before the game ended.
"Every team has their days and unfortunately today was our day, where we created tons of opportunities, we just couldn't manage to score more than they did," LaPan said.
Lesnau got CMU a 1-0 lead Saturday in the first period after deflecting a shot by Anson. Carlson also got an assist.
Robert Morris tied the game with 3:06 remaining in the second. Senior Craig Lipar fired a pass to senior Aaron Jelleberg with 57 seconds left to give CMU a 2-1 lead.
In the third, sophomore Greg Martin added an insurance goal, assisted by Carlson.
On Friday, CMU got off to a fast start. Sophomore Brandon Hentrich, Jakubik, who scored two, and Lesnau all scored goals to give CMU the 4-0 lead after the first.
In the third, senior Steve Myers, Lesnau and Anson added goals. Lesnau finished with two goals and three assists and Jakubik finished with two goals and an assist.
Ranking Implications
The second rankings of the season come out this week. Sitting sixth after the first rankings, Central (10-4) put together a decent stretch that could move them up.
"I still think we're going to move up a spot or two," Lipar said.
