The wrestling team's intrasquad meet Sunday provided some competitive match ups and solid early-season tests for the Chippewas.
One of the most intriguing matches was in the 157-pounder match between sophomores Steve Brown and Tyler Grayson. Grayson earned a 3-2 victory after scoring an escape and the only takedown of the match in the second period.
"We see a lot of each other in practice," Grayson said. "We know what each other does. It gets more difficult each time."
With the two so evenly matched, coach Tom Borrelli expects it to be a close call throughout the season as to who will emerge at the starter for CMU in the weight class.
"I don't think anything was settled today," he said. "Tyler (Grayson) is starting right now. We'll see how they both respond to the competition."
Another close match came in the 174-pound weight class with senior Brandon Sinnott facing sophomore Mike Miller. Sinnott won, 5-3, with two takedowns in the first period and an escape in the third.
"We wanted a match to get Brandon (Sinnott) in the groove," Borrelli said. "Mike (Miller) is trying to get in good matches as well."
Miller, who is using an Olympic redshirt this season, is looking to get in as much work with the team as he can before he goes to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. He will be with the team for the rest of this semester and sporadically throughout next semester.
"I was real excited to wrestle Brandon (Sinnott)," Miller said. "I knew it would be a close match. We really push each other hard in practice."
Like Miller, Sinnott also feels that he improves each time the two face off. He said they have not wrestled as much in practice as last year, but when they do meet it helps them both for future matches.
"He (Miller) helps me to get used to fast-paced matches," Sinnott said. "It's good to see someone of his caliber early on."
