One of the best seasons in the history of Central Michigan's volleyball program came to an end Friday in Toledo Ohio.
Miami eliminated the Chippewas from the Mid-American Conference Tournament 3-0 (30-25, 30-28, 31-29). The match was a defensive battle that saw Miami hit .137 and CMU hit .108.
"We played outstanding defensively," said coach Erik Olson. "We just didn't move the ball to our outsides with any effectiveness."
Junior Kate Fissel led Central with 14 kills and was the only Chippewa with double-digit kills.
The match marked the final time senior Courtney Kersten will take the floor in a CMU jersey. Kersten put together one of the finest careers in the program's history. She is second on the school's all-time assists list and has been an integral part in helping Olson turn the CMU program around.
"Courtney is one of the most competitive players I have ever been around," Olson said. "She meant everything to this program and will be missed."
The Chippewas got off to the best start in school history this season at 12-3 and put together a winning streak of eight matches during the last two months of the season.
CMU also won its opening-round match in the MAC Tournament for the first time since 1982.
"We're disappointed that we're not still playing, but we accomplished a lot this season and I feel that the program is in good hands moving forward." Olson said.
