AKRON, Ohio - It almost was deja vu all over again Friday for the football team.

Down 32-20 with 8:03 remaining against Akron, CMU was looking at the possibility of losing its second consecutive game against a team with nothing to lose.

It also was looking at the possibility of heading into Saturday's Mid-American Conference Championship against Miami University with two consecutive losses to sub-.500 conference foes.

But Dan LeFevour and the Chippewas didn't let that happen.

The sophomore quarterback led the team to touchdowns on its final two drives at the Rubber Bowl to secure a 35-32 win and a second consecutive bowl bid.

"We knew we had to win this game," LeFevour said. "Not only to get us momentum, but to secure a bowl game and not fall to .500."

It took four plays for LeFevour to respond to Akron's final touchdown in the fourth quarter. He threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to freshman receiver Kito Poblah with 6:58 remaining to cut Akron's lead to 32-27.

After the defense forced the Zips (4-8 overall, 3-5 Mid-American Conference) to punt, LeFevour led a CMU drive which seemed all too familiar to the team's final drive in its 34-31 win Nov. 6 against Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.

On the second play from scrimmage, LeFevour connected with a double-covered Bryan Anderson for 45 yards, bringing the offense to Akron's 8-yard line.

LeFevour said the call was to run by the Akron secondary rather than pulling up.

"I underthrew Bryan a little bit, but he still made a great play," LeFevour said. "The offensive line gave me great time."

LeFevour completed the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak to make the score 35-32 with 1:31 remaining.
