Not many collegiate wrestlers have the talent to get the opportunity to train at an Olympic level.
But Central Michigan's Mike Miller is one of the few who will have that opportunity this season. The sophomore will take an Olympic redshirt this season to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"I'll be going against some of the best guys in the nation and the world," Miller said. "This will help me improve a lot."
Coach Tom Borrelli said he expects Miller to improve on his already-exceptional talent with the experience he'll get at the center.
"I see the ability for him to improve at a rapid rate," he said. "I don't know of many other guys that would benefit from this."
It was because of Borrelli's belief that Miller could benefit greatly from an Olympic redshirt season that he first brought up the idea to him.
"Coach first suggested it to me and I was excited to do it," Miller said.
Miller's work this season in Colorado should translate well into his collegiate career when he returns to CMU next year. Borrelli said Miller has really bought into what he has been taught at Central, which is similar to the style he will work with this year.
"Mike is one of the guys who really believes in the style of wrestling we teach," Borrelli said. "He trusts it enough to work on the things that we teach."
Miller will continue to practice with the team until early 2008.
