AKRON, Ohio - Ontario Sneed had to wait on the sidelines for virtually the entire season until he got his chance to take over again.

On Friday, the junior tailback showed flashes of the same type of ability that landed him 168 yards and three touchdowns in the football team's home opener against Toledo.

With starter Justin Hoskins out with an unspecified injury, Sneed took the ball and stole the show, leading Central down the field on several of its final scoring drives.

Sneed finished with 13 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown - which he attributed to the big guys on the offensive line.

"They were getting it done up front," Sneed said. "They had a weird defense, a 3-3 stack, so if you get through the first level then there's no secondary. If the job gets done up front, there's going to be a lot of holes."

After his breakout performance against Toledo, Sneed lost three fumbles in the next two games before injuring his ankle in CMU's 35-10 Homecoming win against Northern Illinois.

Hoskins took over the workload at the position and Sneed was stuck nursing his injury while waiting for more playing time.

"It's not easy when you play a lot and then you have to cheer for someone else," said coach Butch Jones. "But he's an extremely unselfish person, and he got his opportunity (Friday), and he made the most of it - I was really happy to see it."

Now, with the extent of Hoskins' injury unknown, Sneed may be asked to play a significant role Saturday in the Mid-American Conference championship at Ford Field, a venue he's familiar with. He had a 96-yard run in last year's title win.

"It's just the next man in," Sneed said. "Everybody was looking to me to step up. I just play the best I can for my teammates, and do whatever we need to help us win."
