Nooses disturb community
The Mount Pleasant Area Diversity Group expresses its strong support of CMU officials' statement denouncing the placement of four nooses in a campus building classroom. The hanging of nooses is a racist act and its perpetration tears not only the fabric of the University but also the Mount Pleasant community.
The MPADG also condemns other reprehensible acts of racism and intolerance that occurred on CMU's campus this fall. These include anonymously distributed racist "Columbus Day" flyers directed against Native Americans and religiously intolerant anti-Muslim messages aimed at several faculty members.
The Mount Pleasant Area Diversity Group affirms values of fairness and equality for all human beings. We ask Mount Pleasant community members to join with us in actively supporting diversity by participating in CMU's petition of inclusion that denounces such senseless and cowardly racist acts as noose hanging. This can be done by sending an e-mail listing your name to cmuline@cmich.edu.
We also invite those in the Mount Pleasant community who are interested to learn about, and support, diversity to join our group. Our next meeting is at 6 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Bovee University Center Multicultural Center, Room 125.

IET's stance on incident
We strongly denounce acts of hatred, violence, ignorance, and racism. The recent disturbing event in one of the Engineering and Technology classrooms does not reflect the values, ideals and behaviors that we expect and demand of our students. We reaffirm our respect for diversity and the fundamental right to live without fear. We pledge our efforts to educate our students on contemporary issues, with the hope that the entire community will follow suit. Finally, we promise to inculcate in our students an understanding of their ethical responsibilities as citizens and as future members of their chosen professions.
