The art displayed in residence halls was moved to the University Art Gallery on Wednesday, where it will be displayed until Dec. 15.

Various art pieces went on display in residence halls around campus starting Oct. 15 as a part of the "Great Inspirations in Unexpected Places" exhibit.

Participants will be present to show their work in the University Art Gallery today from 4 to 7 p.m. Contributors ranged from CMU staff and faculty to students.

Kulhavi Hall Residence Hall Director Darell Armentrout, a coordinator of the exhibit, said the project was a success.

"If people are around next year they can see it again," he said. "I really hope to make it an annual exhibit."

Contributors to the exhibit had to send a picture of their works to Armentrout for approval. Projects to be submitted were any form of art, including digital photographs and acrylic paintings. This was the first year for the exhibition.

Though the exhibit went well, Armentrout hopes to change things for next year.

"I hope to start the exhibit earlier, it'd be a nice way to kick off the new school year," he said. "I'd also like to figure out a plan if some of the art gets damaged."

Corby Blem, senior specialist clerk in the Student Employment Center, had two acrylic paintings in the exhibit.

"When I first found out about the exhibit, I thought it would be a good opportunity for some exposure," he said. "This was my first piece ever in a gallery. I started with art a few years ago at an art fair to see if any of my stuff would sell. This has been great because having it shown like this puts some legitimacy behind my work."

Jay Hoffman, Physician Assistant Program clinical education coordinator, said he was surprised his digital photographs were chosen for the exhibit.

"I submitted some of my work and I was surprised when four of them were selected," Hoffman said.

Armentrout has high hopes for the program, and said he wants the show to be recognized year by year.

He said he's keeping the contact information of artists whose work wasn't selected for this year's exhibits. They could be used in the future, he said.

"This has the potential to be a pretty huge deal, and I hope to see it in more places next year," he said. "I hope it becomes a show to look for."
