DETROIT - The Central Michigan football team's back-to-back Mid-American Conference championship attracted the eyes of Motor City Bowl officials Saturday.
Soon after CMU's 35-10 win over Miami University, the bowl extended an invitation to the Chippewas to play in the bowl for the second straight year.
Central beat Middle Tennessee State 35-17 in last year's Motor City Bowl.
"We went 10 years before we ever got a team from the state of Michigan," said Ken Hoffman, Motor City Bowl Executive Director. "Central was our first team, and they did a bang-up job last year. Now they're back-to-back MAC Champions. With the way the community responded to that game, I think they deserve to be (in the Motor City Bowl)."
Sophomore quarterback Dan LeFevour said the team is excited to play in this year's version, which is expected to draw a Big Ten team.
Hoffman said CMU's opponent would be announced Sunday afternoon.
"We've blown some opportunities against in some big games this year," LeFevour said. "That's a great opportunity for us to play a Big Ten team in this environment.
The GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., which had first selection of a MAC team, picked Bowling Green to play in the bowl Saturday.
"That was a no-brainer for them. I think the tie-breaker for them was (BGSU's) eight wins, which was the best record in the conference," said Hoffman, also the executive director of the International Bowl. "They're an explosive offensive team that they've already successfully marketed."
