The club hockey team faces only one team the rest of the season that is neither ranked nor a Division 1 team.
That stretch starts tonight in Oxford, Ohio, when No. 5 CMU takes on the No. 3 team in the southeast region, Miami University. The team knows the importance to get this tough stretch going on a good note.
"It's extremely important. The rest of the season there's no weak teams at all," said junior Andrew Anson. "This is when it really comes down to the rankings."
Two weeks ago, Central beat Robert Morris twice but lost 7-3 to No. 2 Davenport. That same weekend, Miami tied and beat Davenport, 7-2.
"We know they're fast and they're a real offensive team," said senior Craig Lipar.
MU and CMU both come into the game with potent offensive teams. Miami comes into the game averaging 4.92 goals per game, while CMU averages 5.36.
However, each team is allowing more than 2.75 per game. Central knows the team that plays the best defense will win.
"We want to keep their scoring opportunities to a minimum," Lipar said.
The team worked on its defense in practice this week because of the added pressure of the weekend.
"This week in practice we worked a lot on our defensive system," Lipar said, "It's a one-two forecheck. Just keeping that system fresh in our head so we can put it together this weekend against Miami."
With the first semester winding down, Anson knows finishing the first half of the season on a strong note is vital to keeping the team's flow going.
"It's extremely important to have positive momentum coming back from break when we come back in January," Anson said.
